We are an organization started by individuals who have been touched by cancer. Our experiences indicated that most are unprepared when they are confronted by cancer and the Health System in Uganda is ill equipped to provide timely diagnosis and treatment to those who suffer from cancer. Cancer prevention is not emphasized.
One common experience was a "deep feeling of loneliness" during the struggle with cancer. We knew little about cancer, we were slow to consider or accept it as the cause of our non-stoppable symptoms. Inevitably, this led to long delays before diagnosis. A few of us were referred to centers outside Uganda, where the diagnosis was made. Some of us received wrong diagnoses.
As Promoters of UCRF, we believe we can tap into these experiences to reduce stigma associated with cancer, improve access to reliable information about cancer, and encourage people to seek early diagnosis and cancer treatment.
We believe Ugandan citizens can be a positive force to develop strategies and services to prevent cancer, to encourage early diagnosis of cancer, and hence the possibility of a timely treatment to cure cancer.
Uganda is a very poor country with many health concerns, including malnutrition, parasitic and infectious diseases. Thus, cancer will remain a low priority for Government funding in the foreseeable future. Yet cancer is likely to become an important problem in our lives as infectious diseases are controlled, and people adopt more urbanized lifestyles.
Thus, to mitigate the blow of cancer, we established ourselves as Promoters of UCRF to mobilize Ugandans to inform people about cancer. We believe accurate information can empower people to soften the experience with cancer.
Have you been touched by cancer - personally, your relative, friend, workmate or someone you know? Are you passionate about learning what you can do to help lighten the burden of cancer? Let us know! We are always looking for volunteers to help us make our vision of bringing accurate and reliable information about cancer to our people. We'll work with you to find a way for you to volunteer that best suits you. We're excited to have you join the team!
Whether you help through monetary donations, volunteering your time, or spreading our mission through word-of-mouth, thank you. We couldn't accomplish our goal of bringing information about cancer to our people without the help of supporters like you.
